Building the skill

A practical path for learning to read the DOM without fooling yourself.

DOM reading is a perceptual skill. It builds with deliberate practice — mostly in replay and simulation.

Stages

  1. Mechanics — place, move and cancel orders in simulation until execution is automatic.
  2. Normal — watch the book at quiet and busy times and describe, in words, what normal size and refresh speed look like.
  3. Changes at levels — watch only what happens at levels you marked in advance. Note pulling, stacking and refilling.
  4. Confirmation — pair each DOM observation with what the tape or footprint shows.
  5. Journalling — record what you saw, what you expected, and what happened.

Key Insight

The goal at every stage is to separate observation from interpretation. "Bid size dropped from 600 to 50 as price approached" is an observation. "Buyers gave up" is an interpretation.

Trading implication

Months of replay are normal. If the DOM feels overwhelming, narrow the job: one instrument, one time of day, two or three levels.
